Today the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute (MCLI) releases the Winter 2019/2020 issue of Human Rights Now!

As the winter cold and rain descends upon the Bay Area, addressing the glaring homelessness and housing crisis is front and center in our work. Despite these harsh seasonal conditions, the City of Oakland continues its sweeps of homeless encampments leaving the residents at the mercy of the elements endangering their lives.

In this issue of Human Rights Now! we are proud to announce the first in a three-part series of Bay Area Landless People’s Alliance articles discussing the realities of the housing and homelessness crisis in Oakland. We discuss MCLI’s report on U.S. human rights violations and delegation to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva in 2020 We also include Best Practices Policy Project’s shadow report and delegation to the Council to report on violations of sex workers’ rights and the rights of transgender immigrants.

Encouraging involvement at the local level by our supporters, we address environmental racism and police brutality in two letters sent to Bay Area city councils. One letter supports Richmond’s Coal Ban.  The other letter urges a charter amendment strengthening Berkeley’s Police Oversight Commission.

The City of Richmond will vote on the Coal Ban on January 14, 2020. Please come out. For more information click here.

In this issue of Human Rights Now! Jon Rainwater of Peace Action discusses proposed SANE federal legislation and urges us to take political action to support abolition of nuclear weapons programs that take billions of dollars away from the U.S. population. We also celebrate our ongoing commitment to labor and economic rights with articles about unionization of nonprofits and postal workers.

Please share this issue of Human Rights Now! with as many people as possible.
