MCLI is Seeking a New Executive Director
Dear MCLI supporter,
I am reaching out to you today to let you know that I (Steven DiCaprio) will be stepping down as Interim Executive Director of the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute effective January 31, 2020. As I step down, I am leaving with a sense of accomplishment.
During my time with MCLI, we have achieved numerous victories fighting the criminalization of homelessness as well as submitting reports to the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, U.N. Human Rights Committee, and U.N. Human Rights Council. We also continued MCLI’s crucial human rights education by organizing human rights events on racism, housing, immigration, and the rights of the child as well as continuing the publication of Human Rights Now! MCLI’s signature newsletter.
It has been wonderful working with Ann Fagan Ginger. In the photo above, Ann and I are standing in front of the sign at the MCLI office. I am extremely grateful to learn about human rights from such an icon as well as be exposed to her vision of a broad interpretation of human rights where all civil rights laws and human rights treaties are enforced.
I have also been inspired by Ann’s vision to work with social and political movements to ensure that human rights can be used as an approach with organizing and policy advocacy in addition to MCLI’s work reporting to international human rights monitors. Without meeting Ann, I may never have known the robust human rights framework that exists within U.S. treaties and international law. I may never have known how effective these tools could be to place pressure on local, state, and federal officials. I want to thank Ann for her lifelong committment and for her mentorship as I worked to assist with this ongoing leadership transition.
I also want to thank all MCLI supporters, workers, volunteers, interns, and board members. I look forward to continue working with the wonderful workers and board of directors of MCLI to ensure our continued success.
I am also looking forward to working with new leadership. We encourage our supporters to distribute the job description for applicants to become the next Interim Exectuive Director of the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute. You can find the job description here: http://www.mclihumanrights.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Executive-Director-of-Meiklejohn-Civil-Liberties-Institute-Job-Description.pdf
I am confident that an enthusiastic leader will step forward to ensure MCLI’s continued success. I encourage everyone to make a contribution today to support MCLI’s new leadership.
In solidarity,
Steven DeCaprio
